TOUR DESCRIPTIONS

NAVY BASE / NAUTICUS
Tuesday, May 9, 2017
Tour the Norfolk Naval Base, the world’s largest naval facility. Start the day with a tour of the USS Kearsarge LHD-3, a modern large, amphibious ship and have lunch on-board. After lunch, pick up your guide at the Visitor Center and continue on a driving tour of Admiral’s Row, the Naval Air Station, and the piers. Enjoy a buffet lunch at one of the Clubs on base, featuring a salad bar and hot entree. After lunch, head downtown to Nauticus, an exciting 120,000 square-foot science and technology center that explores the power of the sea with interactive and educational exhibits. On the second deck of Nauticus is the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, which features a large collection of naval artwork, ship models and underwater artifacts. Also part of Nauticus is the USS Wisconsin. The Wisconsin is one of the largest and last battleships to be built by the U.S. Navy. Note: If for any reason the Naval Base is closed to the public (ie: security issues), the tour length will be shortened, but refunds can’t be issued. Due to heightened security, participants may be searched and a photo ID is required.

8:45am board bus, 4:15pm back at hotel
Tues – Fri: $62/Person includes bus, escort, lunch, and admission.

Note: If for any reason the Naval Base is closed to the public (ie: security issues), the tour length will be shortened, but refunds can’t be issued. Due to heightened security, participants may be searched and a photo ID is required.

COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG
Wednesday, May 10, 2017

There were insufficient signups for the tour originally scheduled this date. AFR Inc. will issue refund checks for those who had signed up. We have substituted an exciting trip to the world famous Colonial Williamsburg, one hour from the hotel.

Details: Regular admission price is $40.99/day. With documentation that you are a veteran, the price drops to 1/2 that. Spouses get the same 50% off. Documentation includes a driver license with “Veteran” on it, a copy of a DD214 or any document that shows your picture with proof of military service. Wheelchairs available and free.

MILITARY AVIATION MUSEUM
Thursday, May 11, 2017 morning

There were insufficient signups for the tour originally scheduled this date to the Aquarium: https://www.virginiaaquarium.com/. AFR Inc. will issue refund checks for those who had signed up. However, the Aquarium, a fabulous place, is less than 5 miles from our hotel, and easily accessible for those who wish to visit it.

We are offering a second optional tour, this one to the Military Aviation Museum: http://www.militaryaviationmuseum.org/ The museum is less than a half-hour south of the hotel along the ocean road. This short clip provides a very clear picture of this amazing place, a museum that will thrill anyone interested in military aviation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpAC8WylHB8

Tickets are very modestly priced:

  • Adults – $15.00
  • Seniors (65+) – $13.00
  • Active Duty or Retired Military – $12.00
  • WWII Veterans – Free

AFTERNOON
1330 – “REMINISCENCES”. At 1330 Bill Brown and Larry Chime, who were junior officers aboard OKINAWA during her first (1967) Vietnam deployment, will moderate a “REMINISCENCES” session in the Hospitality

Suite (or perhaps outdoors, weather permitting). This session is every shipmate’s opportunity to share memories and feelings about our time aboard OKINAWA, what it meant them, and how it may have affected us for the rest of our lives. Everyone will have the opportunity to speak. Many reunion attendees over the years, Navy-wide, have found these sessions to be very important parts of their reunion.

TRANSPORTATION NOTES
For the Tuesday tour to USS KEARSARGE, NAUTICUS and USS WISCONSIN, transportation is included in the price of the tour. If you signed up for this Tuesday tour, your transportation has already been paid for.

For the Wednesday tour to Colonial Williamsburg, we are planning on car pools which could be arranged during meals Monday and Tuesday evenings. However, we need to be sure that “everyone has a ride”.

The same goes for the Thursday tours to the nearby Aquarium and the nearby Military Aviation Museum.

  • If you have arranged for a rental car during your stay, let us know.
  • If you have arranged for a rental car, and would be willing to drive two others back and forth to Williamsburg, let us know that, too.
  • If you need to share a rental car, which we can arrange, tell us that, too.

So, please send us an email QUICKLY summarizing your transportation situation on Wednesday 10 May and Thursday 11 May. Send your “OKINAWA TRANSPORTATION MESSAGE” to: wtbislander@gmail.com AND USSOki50@gmail.com.

NOTE: WHEELCHAIRS
We have been advised that the wheelchairs are free at Colonial Williamsburg, but on a first-come, first-served basis. They advise that it would be unusual for them to run out of wheelchairs on a weekday in early May, but it’s possible. If you want to guarantee one you can pay for a rental from an outside company, and it will be waiting for you at Colonial Williamsburg. The rental company number is 757-645-4255.
